Project: 60 HP BELLE™ Motor Used for Alfalfa Irrigation Pump
Location: Wasta, South Dakota
Background: In 2005, Pat Trask converted from his Ford 460 propane powered engine to a 60 HP BELLE™ Written-Pole® Motor. It is 2018 and the Written-Pole® Motor is still being used to power his Cornell 10YB submersible pump for irrigating 320 acres of alfalfa farmland. The Written-Pole® motor is pumping water through a 12-inch pipe completely full with a discharge velocity of 14 inches.
Results: Mr. Trask noted that the 60 HP BELLE™ Motor is pumping 3,000 gallons per minute compared to the 2,300 gallons per minute produced by the preceding Ford 460. During 2012, Trask hooked up his WREA meter to the Written-Pole™ motor and was very pleased to note that the 3,000 gallons per minute was only costing him $4.48/hr as opposed to the Ford’s 2,300 gpm for roughly $12/hr. In Trask’s hand-written letter to SPPS he also pointed out the volume difference between the two motors, emphasizing the little noise the BELLE™ Motor produces. Trask’s previous Ford 460 engine required him to replace multiple parts including plugs, rotors, wires, coils, belts, and the engine’s water pump annually. Trask stated that the watering efficiency of the 60 HP motor is something the world badly needs.
